Broughty Bears

Mike and Fenella McDonald have run their business in Broughty Ferry, Dundee for the past 25 years and have had a close relationship with the Steiff, Deans, Merrythought, Herman-Spielwaren, Russ, Gund and Robin Rive companies – all makers of exquisite teddy bears.

In conjunction with Hamish Strang of Steiff we have taken teddy collector groups to visit The World of Steiff at Gingen, Germany, have regular open days at Broughty Ferry and an afternoon of Steiff every spring in the Woodlands Hotel, Broughty Ferry.

Broughty Brears is a dedicated Steiff Club Store and is in close contact with Ian Munro, UK Sales Manager and with Leyla Maneria who is responsible for the UK Steiff Club and who regularly appears on the shopping channel, QVC.

Mike and I are ourselves passionate collectors of bears of all descriptions and are always on the lookout for Artist bears and “bearaphillia”.  Broughty Bears is listed  in the UK Teddy Bear Guide published by Hugglets and is mentioned in such publications as Teddy Bear Scene. At Broughty Ferry you can see one of the largest selections of teddy bears and Steiff animals in Scotland and  we are always pleased to meet other teddy bear collectors and Actophiles.

The deliveries of 2007 Limited Edition Steiff Bears for the Autumn have begun to arrive starting with the lovely musical playing “ The Teddy Bear’s Picnic ” and the Phantom of the Opera, Rupert, Knut Masterpiece, Teddy Pop Art, The Nativity Set 2007, the Steiff Schwibbogen set, Beatrix Potter’s Pigling Band, Paul the Growling Bear and the Tree Wise Bears in alpaca are sure to follow soon.

We also have many Limited Editions which are retired and you may find the last piece to finish a series. There area few Steiff Disney characters – Goofy, Donald Duck and Daisy – tucked away. Hiding at the back of the cabinet is one of the very last Rod Jointed Bear Replicas of 1903 and beside him is an Aunt Lucy the companion of Paddington Bear.

We have always specialised in musical pieces and Herman Spielwaren are world famous for their character Musical and Royal Family bears.

Robin Rive make delightful gollies and bears and her collections are always on show. Do have a day out in Broughty Ferry and meet them all!
